One absolute given in fashion is that when a trend goes out of style, odds are, it will come back eventually and that is what mom jeans did exactly.

This has proven true in past seasons with the resurrection of all-things-’90s. From tiny sunglasses to glossy lips, the decade has had me so happy because my mom was intuitive enough to save us a wardrobe full of her favorite clothes for us to break out and tell everyone “it’s vintage!”

Photography: Vince Oyolo: – https://www.instagram.com/patapic_ke/

One of the biggest ‘90s resurgences? Mom jean. Our skinny jeans are having (some temporary) time out because mom – or mum – jeans are having a much-needed moment in our wardrobes. I was lucky enough to thrift a good deal on vintage extra baggy mom jeans in the famous Toi markets.

Mom jeans are high-waisted, often lightly colored women’s jeans with a tapered leg, these jeans are super flattering and still come in your classic black, blue and ripped styles.

Mom jeans with a rise that hit well above the belly button make our bottom appear longer and flatter than it otherwise might. And it gives me the illusion that I look taller.

Here’s all the inspiration you need to rock them:

The baggy fit of the jeans already evokes a menswear-feel, so make the style look totally intentional with other masculine pieces like a button-up. Add a feminine touch with a kimono.

There’s something très chic about the juxtaposition of baggy, distressed jeans and sleek black booties. Showing just a little bit of ankle is unexpected, and the combo of high waist jeans and heeled booties make legs look never-ending (perfect for the vertically-challenged!)

A white button-up and kimono can make for a sophisticated casual Friday workwear look, but when paired with mom jeans, give a lax vibe that can be your new everyday uniform.

If anything makes or breaks an outfit is the final touches a.k.a accessorizing.

Just when you thought we were running out of trends to revive from the ’90s, another nostalgic piece has slowly been making its comeback: teeny, tiny sunglasses. Tiny sunglasses are a fashion cue ripped from The Matrix.

The micro frames reigned as the ultimate cool-girl statement in the ’90s and early 2000s. The whole point is that they are very small and narrow — so small that they should just cover the tiniest sliver of your face.

Give your skinny jeans a break and try a straight-legged, looser fit mom jean.

I personally really loved how this whole look came about. Any thoughts?

Stay Stylish,
Kadenyi.

Have you guys ever gone to a Barak Jacuzzi and friends Party? Its so much fun!

Photographer : Vince Oyolo

I am always out and about exploring fun events, restaurants and new Art/music in Kenya. The Kenyan creative scene is growing every day with so much variety it makes my soul swoon. On this road of discovery, I happen to meet one of my Favorite performers and now good friend; Kenyan-American rapper Barak Jacuzzi. He hosted  first ever “Barak Jacuzzi & Friends 90s Jam” at the Creative Garage to celebrate his latest release and the theme was 90’s. The crowd and I did not waste any time and had so much fun creating oldie looks like we were back in the 90s.

This time round, he held a casual documentary film of the making of the Juice Bar 2 Album at J’s Bar which was such a different feel to his last event.

I went with a bunch of my friends and Sister Yimbiha, watched the film, drank some cocktails and had thee most amazing chicken skewers. I have a whole vlog (Video Blog) about it HERE.

If you are ever looking for a weekend plan just check our Barak Jacuzzi instagram, he is always doing a show and never disappoints.

I have been loving a simple pieces outfit looks currently with thick heeled black booties. For this look, I went for a bohemian style floral crop top with slim straps from partnered with black high waist skinny jeans from . Since the event would be running late into the night I added on my faded, ragged but fitting blue denim jacket (I’M OBSESSED) which I wore off shoulder until it was too cold outside.

My hair was in twist outs which makes me look so street. To accessorize, I wore my gold choker and brass cuff  finished the look with green lipstick to just throw off everything lol.

If you read this blog post up to here, you are the greatest 🙂

ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Kilimani Street Festival is an event that has been taking place regularly since 2014 and is hosted by Kilimani Project Foundation,a community and residents association that seeks out to build a community of choice in Kilimani. My good friend and photographer Vince Oyolo has been trying to get me to attend the event for months now and I am glad I finally did as it was lots of fun.

The fun-filled day offers a perfect platform for family and friends to mingle and sample some of the products, including kids entertainment, sales from organic farmers market, fashion item vendors, food vendors and soul soothing entertainment flowing through the day on display.

The Kilimani Street Festival initially targeted the  cultural diverse population of people who live and work or play in Kilimani but It has over the time grown to an event that attracts an attendance of hundreds of Nairobi residents and their friends of all walks of life.

HOW TO ACCESS THE EVENT:

 Private/Personal vehicles:

  • Use Dennis Pritt Road and Park at St. Georges Primary School

Public Means of Transport:

  • From Westlands: Alight at Dennis Pritt Road and walk down the road. The venue is 2mins from Road House on your right.
  • From Town: Take a No. 46 and alight at Quality. Walk down the road toward Lenana Road. The venue is a few minutes from Spinal Injury Hospital.

When there, I noticed that Fashion also took center stage of the festival, with different designers showcasing their creativity on interiors and fabrics. I loved this as I got to snap some fabulous Pictures for Nairobi street style.

If its something you have not attended before I would highly recommend it. Prepare yourself  and come and enjoy a carnival affair with fan, food, drinks, kids corner and wide variety of vendors dealing with arts and fashion. The aim of this event is encourage familiarization with your neighbor for a safer and friendlier community feeling. I mean, How cool is that?

If you live in Kilimani, then you should come experience a special day of shopping and having a good time with your friends on your street. How fun!

On To The Outfit

Boho chic is one of my all-time favorite style vibes, but it can be tricky to pull off. Fret not as I have a simple, easy cheat sheet to help you nail bohemian style in a flash. Maxi dresses represent an easiness  and femininity often seen in boho chic style. The color white and the maxi dress goes so well as you often create a breezy and refreshing outfit.

One advantage of wearing a maxi dress is that you really don’t have to do much to style it. It literally covers your entire body. So it comes down to the style and cutting of the dress, and the accessories and shoes that affects whether the outfit looks good. In this case, I simply wore the beautiful dress with black sock boots and it looked amazing.

If you are one of those who like more creativity or you simply like more layers, this one may be for you. Simply drape a denim jacket over your shoulders for a super chic look. Turn this outfit into a boho outfit by wearing a boho style statement necklace and some chic African rings. Whether your prefer distressed leather or cloth, fringe or suede, a tiny cross-body or an oversized hobo bag, having a reliable and fantastic purse is key to tying your outfit all together.

Outfit Details

Jacket: Thrifted

Dress: Forever 21

Rings: Maasai Market

Bag: Old

Boots: H&M

If it were a sunny day, Oversized sunglasses would have been the choice as  they transcended boho girls and became a huge fashion trend just a few years ago. Although they aren’t as popular in the mainstream anymore, they’re still a bohemian staple. I tend to break, scratch, and lose sunglasses, so I typically just get inexpensive pairs from Kadenyi Pop Up.

If you have reach this point of the blog post, I really want to encourage you to take just one little step further. That is to go to your wardrobe or your local stores to try out a bohemian maxi dress, got to the Kilimani Street festival and get out of your comfort zone.

Stay Stylish,

Happy Thursday my sweet friends!

I hope you all are having a great week! I feel like its been such a long time since I sat down an typed on my website. It feels so good, I have missed you guys so much. Have you missed me? I  have so many blog posts that are coming up that I shot this and last year I’m sure all of you will love.

To start you off, how to style faux fur coats. It’s no surprise that they’re one of my favorite outerwear pieces, as I’ve worn them countless times on the gram but I dont think I’ve talked about how to wear them in the blog. Today, I thought it would be a good idea to share how I would style them making it easier to reference later on.

Being a fashion blogger, I do challenge myself to think outside the box and wear clothing that perhaps I wouldn’t otherwise wear and through doing so, I’ve found that some pieces I’d perhaps turn my head to are actually quite practical, one of which are faux fur coats. Before blogging, I would’ve most likely thought, though stylish, they wouldn’t be at all practical for everyday kind of wear and save them more for special occasions. Honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Perhaps some of you feel this way and for that reason alone don’t own one, feeling as though you’d never get any real use out if it. These three outfits are ones that I feel can be easily worn on the regular. It all comes down to how you put the pieces together to make it more practical and less forced.

Wearing black is not only chic and flattering, but super easy. It serves as somewhat of a blank canvas for whatever accessory or layering piece you wish to add to bring the outfit to life and make it more interesting, including a faux fur coat. When done in fun colors or patterns, they’ll pop even more against the monochrome, and even if you decided to go for an understated version in black or another solid colored neutral like this cropped tee, the texture contrast itself adds an equal impact, making for an easy no-fuss option.

I am known for making a 300 bob thrift-store bargain look like a designer-label. My style lately is predominantly vintage-inspired clothing. Not always, but very, very often.

Photographer : Vince Oyolo

Vintage shirts from nearly any era are the easiest way to step into the world of wearing vintage. Shirts and sweaters are relatively low-maintenance, and pair with any modern bottoms.

Despite how widely worn and loved vintage clothes are, some of us still get that familiar icky feeling when entering a second hand shop. The racks seem endless (and not in a good way), the air seems stuffy and the amazing finds are not a sure thing. Nonetheless, vintage shopping is still one of the cheapest, most eco-friendly and fun ways to get in on the trends you love. Moreover, it will ensure that you wont see your outfit doppelganger around every corner.

Speaking of, have you checked out my pop up store (Kadenyi’s Pop Up)? I will be updating it weekly so y’all can get pretty much most of the looks I wear in this blog.

As a vintage seller, I can tell you that lots of modern designers and fashion houses have massive archives of vintage garments that they are constantly adding to and from which they draw inspiration. In fact, most contemporary fashion is really a reinterpretation of styles from the past, and you would be surprised how close a lot of modern designer clothing comes to replicating older garments. Finding and wearing one such garment is an easy way of avoiding a costume-y look

Like most things, it’s all in the balance: a bit of modern mixed with a bit of the old makes the thrifted pieces a bit more wearable while giving my new pieces a bit of an edge!

Chances are, unless you are dedicating hours to recreating precise vintage hairstyles and makeup application, your hair and makeup are already going to look comparatively modern. Simplicity in hair and makeup is a tried and true way of grounding a vintage outfit, such as wearing retro makeup which is so minimal that it’s super easy to put on in the early morning before work or school or whatever.

Pairing vintage clothing with decidedly modern shoes, bags and sunglasses is an easy way to dramatically ground an otherwise whimsical garment. It is easy to keep the overall look streamlined by picking a color that is present in the garment and wearing contemporary accessories in the same color.

Of course, pops of vibrant color paired with all black accessories (or vice versa) is also a quick way to modernize a classic vintage garment.

If vintage isn’t your thing, don’t try to go from zero to hero and find a head to toe look. Searching for beautiful pieces that you can incorporate into your wardrobe and focusing your search on a particular item will help you not to feel intimidated by the endless racks.

my favourite way to wear vintage is to look like I’m not wearing vintage at all. I like to hunt for items that are timeless, beautifully made and reflective of current trends. The best thing about vintage is that when you find a true treasure, no one else will ever have it, and that is what makes your wardrobe (and style) unique.

Outfit  Details

Shirt: Vintage (Previously my Dads)

Choker : Forever 21

Watch: Casio

Shorts: Thrifted (Coming soon on my store)

Boots: Gifted

Although not nearly as earth-friendly and story-filled, there are many stores that offer a selection of vintage-inspired but modern-made clothing pieces. These are a great alternative to true vintage, as you don’t have to worry so much about damaging them as they are already in a size guaranteed to fit you.

The great thing about vintage is that everything comes back into style sooner or later, so something from 40 years ago may look as rad as something from your local (insert popular store name here). And really, anyone can wear vintage.

Scarves and belts are two of my favourite vintage pieces to wear. They are both easy to wear. Try a scarf in your hair, tied to a purse or wrapped in a bow around your neck.

So next time you don’t have the option to dig around a thrift store bin or are just looking for the finishing vintage piece, check out my pop up store, I will be doing all the searching for you, Plus you never know what you might find; maybe even a little designer clutch for less than ksh 1000.

May the thrifting odds be ever in your favour!

Stay Stylish,

Kadenyi.

Y’all do not understand how easily I was going to get a heat stroke just to take this pictures!  Dubai heat is no joke. It was like 8’0 clock and that was too late for me to be walking around in open air. Especially in the summer on a desert! But we gotta do it for the blog and gram.

Photographer : Yimbiha

Can we also take a moment and admire the artistry that is this water fall? I remember seeing it and knew that this will be my shoot location.I mean isn’t this gorgeous?

Now on to the blog post, Floral fashion is today’s topic and it doesn’t have to be cheesy! With select patterns and symbols (and an open mind!), you may find that flaunting flower vibes really is your thing.

Floral prints and bright pieces always come into play come spring. It’s the time of year that we finally get to shed a few layers and change the direction of our style. While not everyone may be ready to tuck away their cozy knits and rain-ready boots, I sure am – and I am not hesitating with jumping into my favorite spring trends.

How to Wear Floral Prints this Spring

Make a statement:

Floral print accessories are a great way to try the floral print trend as seasons transition. A floral print top or pair of shoes will brighten up your day without looking over-the-top. If you’re wary of this trend, try incorporating it into your outfit as a statement accessory piece–you’ll make an impact, but it will still be subtle!

Add a contrast:

Toughen up your floral pieces by pairing them with a contrasting texture or color, like black. This skirt paired with this cute top creates a more balanced and visually intriguing overall look. Add on a pair of simple chic jewelery to your floral and you’ve create a look that combines ladylike prints with toughened up fashion.

Go girly:

Floral print is a definite staple in the girly-girl closet:  Think wedding outfits. If wedding bells-inspired style isn’t your thing, you can still create a totally girly look by picking up your favorite skirts, dresses, and blouses in tiny floral prints. Traditionally girly styles are made even more feminine with the addition of this fun print.

Go for the Unexpected:

This flower printed top may be floral, but it’s not the typical print we’re used to seeing. This print almost has a tropical vibe to it which makes it really unique. This sort of print paired with the fact that it’s almost a velvety texture makes it a really one-of-a-kind piece to have in your wardrobe.

Go edgy:

With the right outfit, floral print can also have an edgy feel. Instead of picking dainty pastel florals, try a larger print in darker colors. As a bonus, these darker florals can be worn into cooler seasons, too! Another way to give your floral look an edgier vibe is to pair a feminine floral with tougher accessories like this choker and sunglasses. Mix and match for a look that’s all your own!

Finish off with great shoes:

A pair of perfect high heels can lengthen your legs and pair your skirt very well. Also, a pair of high heels can spice up your outfit. Actually, a pair of high heels can go with any outfit. It’s useful to have pairs of high heels.

Whether its for a lazy Sunday or a busy Monday, sometimes all you need is a good sweatshirt and jeans.

Photography: Vince Oyolo

Destroyed denim and a well worn tee are the unofficial uniform of minimalists, so I figured switching the tee with my oversized sweatshirt and these jeans would achieve the same effect.

This look is the latest street style staple and ‘it’ fashionista favourite. They have transformed the cotton-blend jersey sweatshirt from activewear to streetwear and this trend is one that I fully intend to embrace.

If the last few posts are anything to go by, you’ll know I don’t do majorly dressy. The combination of a simple with something striking is usually how I do it. So this jumper, for me, is possibly my perfect match.

Outfit Details

Sweatshirt: Gifted

Jeans: Vintage

Sunglasses and Flatforms and Bag: Thrifted (Toi Market)

I’m militant about comfort when it comes to these dress-down looks. I will put up with not-wildly-comfortable clothes only if they are transformatively glamorous, which this isn’t.

So the first and only requirement for your sweatshirt is go oversized.

If you don’t your midsection will look bulky. Also, stay away from a tight band at the bottom and go for a loose hem that it is a light enough fabric to tuck inside your jeans without feeling like you’ve put your clothes on the wrong way round.

This is a sweatshirt and jeans, after all: it needs to feel relaxed.

Sweatshirts are sporty but no running shoes please.

Ankle booties are the perfect medium between casual and dressy, making them a natural pairing to your sporty-glam sweatshirt! If you are looking for comfort, flatforms like these ones add the perfect dash of edginess

Finish off your outfit with a statement bag that does not match your shoes! Pick something big and tailored in a complimentary color to your outfit. A great tote works, so does an oversize clutch.

Add a dash of lipstick, Some cool sunglasses, and you’re ready to go!

The new sweatshirt is the perfect mix of comfort and glam, a trend that looks great at any age. Step up your style with these tips and try the trend.

In November of 2016, I was on the hunt for anything and everything denim (as per usual). Yes, I do go a little crazy for the jackets.

Photographer : Derrick Chitala

Lucky for me I happened to Thrift so many to the point I feel like I have forgotten to wear any other cover up.

When it comes to trialling new trends, it can all get a little bit daunting. But rather than cowering behind your ‘safe’ wardrobe staples – the neutral tees, skinny jeans and tailored blazers – take style inspiration from the me as I will be rocking so many pieces from here onward.

So if you haven’t noticed yet, Vintage is the way to go in Nairobi, by this I mean the 70’s all the way to the 90’s. Now, how does one style the trend on everyone’s lips?

Whether they’re rocking flares, denim mini-skirts or shearling jackets, this fashionable look will show you a thing or two about how to adopt the Seventies look into your life

When it comes to clothes, I feel like I pretty much know my taste. I know what I like and what I don’t like, and I tend to have a pretty intentional wardrobe with clothes that are classic, versatile, and a little bit interesting.

This is a formula that works for me, and i’m pretty sure you will be happy with it.

That being said I have a lot of staples aka clothes I wear over and over. A lesson I’ve learnt as I’ve gotten older – buying pieces that are better quality is a great investment – and it need not break the bank!

The best thing about vintage/second-hand clothing – the fabrics and construction have already proven to stand the test of wear and time.

When it comes to denim, This vintage jacket grabbed my attention like no other.

Not only does it have an acid wash, it is the  perfect vintage one that I will be wearing for years to come. I’m just a sucker for the cut and style.

I paired it with Leg-lengthening high-waisted flares  (Which are back! ) to style them for a modern look with a nod to the ’70s.

The tailored overalls have a slightly flared leg and are ideal with heels. Style yours this winter with a turtleneck or lightweight sweater.

For me I styled them differently…

Outfit Details;

Jacket and Sunglasses: Thrifted (Toi Market)

Crop Top: Supre

Watch: Aldo

Flared Overalls aka Dungaree: H&M

Sneakers: Adidas Neo

Yes I was going for the 70’s look with a touch of Kadenyi. As you know, Flared denim has risen—both literally and figuratively.

This is a trend I couldn’t wait to style. Say goodbye to the overalls you wore years ago because this time around they are chic. I’m talking overalls meet high fashion.

There is nothing that finishes a vintage look better than sunglasses. For me, I paired this look with this super cool and edgy Vintage sunglasses,

To make it fun and modern, I added a splash of color with look with this cute crop top

For accessories, I kept it absolutely minimal and adding to the blue shades with this watch.

To finish it off, I kept it Trendy with my new love the Adidas Neo. I am currently a sneaker head guys 🙂

What do you think of this outfit? Lemme know in the comment section below.
