Nyama Mama;  as the phonetically-pleasing name suggests (for non-Swahili speakers, literally translates to Mother of Meat). This is not your typical Kenyan restaurant. What is different about it you ask? Think of your normal everyday Kenyan meals eaten in a beautiful space with a tasty modern twist!

I am constantly drawn to the Delta corner branch in Westlands (a.k.a my local) due to the beautiful aesthetics as well as the super awesome graffiti wall which is all about giving its patrons an authentic Kenyan experience.

PSSSSSSSST….. You can definitely get your Instagram, worthy images here.

The sister, Migalusia

Most of my favorite solo dates as well as family dates have been had here. What keeps me coming back? The ambiance ( I cannot emphasize this enough), happy hour cocktails, the food, and the super friendly wait staff services.

When you get into the indoor seating, there are two entrances. Straight in front of you are the open kitchen and the bar. The other leads to the washbasin and the area near the ramp is a larger seating area decorated with wooden furniture covered with vibrant, colorful dynamic kanga (Kenyan cotton fabric) printed pillows. You will see this Kanga in different prints throughout the restaurant on pillows and the super chic lamp shades.

There is a larger lounging area on one end where you can also see the bar (of which is my favorite spot for solo dates) and the open kitchen where we could watch the talented chefs cook.

I can honestly say what differentiates Nyama Mama cocktails with other restaurants is that they serve them in the iconic metal Vikombes (metal mugs popular in Kenyan homes).

Nyama Mama cocktails…

If you ever find me there, it is normally during happy hour (which is EVERY DAY from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.). The most fun aspect of these delicious cocktails is that they are served from those metallic cups you probably drank uji (Porridge) in ushago (upcountry).

My go-to cocktails are;

1. Mamas ‘Lion share – Ksh. 850
Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch, Martini Rosso, pomegranate, fresh ginger, lemon, and watermelon

2. Mama’s Mule – Ksh. 800
Ketel One vodka, ginger syrup, lime, and Kisampa honey syrup

3. Charcoal Manhattan – Ksh. 950
Charcoal infused Bulleit bourbon and Martini Rosso and chai bitter

4. Yes we Can – Ksh. 950
Ketel One vodka, Kisampa honey syrup, lime, chai bitters and coconut water

Now let’s move on to the food…

Now we all know an empty stomach ad alcohol are a HUGE no, no. I highly advise you to not do a quick perusal of the menu. Just take your time and read them, you will so impressed with the choices… You will love it!

I ordered Mama’s BBQ half chicken, with sautéed sweet potato and arrowroot – Ksh. 1350

Migalusia ordered the Spicy traditional fried matumbo with ugali – Ksh 900 with a side of Buttered terere & managu – Ksh. 150

If there is a go-to for us, this meal right here is it!

This made for a beautiful flat lay 🙂

And boy was this food delicious, we thoroughly stuffed ourselves while sipping on some great cocktails throughout the night. Expect the extraordinary at this modern African roadside diner and you’ll fall in love it!

Nyama Mama is also conveniently located in central locations delivering a dose of hearty mama’s food on the go in Nairobi’s Kilimani area at Yaya Centre and in Gigiri at the Village Market. Try it sometime and let me know what you think.

Thank you so much for reading and hope you try this amazing space,

Stay stylish,
Kadenyi.

Have you guys ever gone to a Barak Jacuzzi and friends Party? Its so much fun!

Photographer : Vince Oyolo

I am always out and about exploring fun events, restaurants and new Art/music in Kenya. The Kenyan creative scene is growing every day with so much variety it makes my soul swoon. On this road of discovery, I happen to meet one of my Favorite performers and now good friend; Kenyan-American rapper Barak Jacuzzi. He hosted  first ever “Barak Jacuzzi & Friends 90s Jam” at the Creative Garage to celebrate his latest release and the theme was 90’s. The crowd and I did not waste any time and had so much fun creating oldie looks like we were back in the 90s.

This time round, he held a casual documentary film of the making of the Juice Bar 2 Album at J’s Bar which was such a different feel to his last event.

I went with a bunch of my friends and Sister Yimbiha, watched the film, drank some cocktails and had thee most amazing chicken skewers. I have a whole vlog (Video Blog) about it HERE.

If you are ever looking for a weekend plan just check our Barak Jacuzzi instagram, he is always doing a show and never disappoints.

I have been loving a simple pieces outfit looks currently with thick heeled black booties. For this look, I went for a bohemian style floral crop top with slim straps from partnered with black high waist skinny jeans from . Since the event would be running late into the night I added on my faded, ragged but fitting blue denim jacket (I’M OBSESSED) which I wore off shoulder until it was too cold outside.

My hair was in twist outs which makes me look so street. To accessorize, I wore my gold choker and brass cuff  finished the look with green lipstick to just throw off everything lol.

If you read this blog post up to here, you are the greatest 🙂

ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Kilimani Street Festival is an event that has been taking place regularly since 2014 and is hosted by Kilimani Project Foundation,a community and residents association that seeks out to build a community of choice in Kilimani. My good friend and photographer Vince Oyolo has been trying to get me to attend the event for months now and I am glad I finally did as it was lots of fun.

The fun-filled day offers a perfect platform for family and friends to mingle and sample some of the products, including kids entertainment, sales from organic farmers market, fashion item vendors, food vendors and soul soothing entertainment flowing through the day on display.

The Kilimani Street Festival initially targeted the  cultural diverse population of people who live and work or play in Kilimani but It has over the time grown to an event that attracts an attendance of hundreds of Nairobi residents and their friends of all walks of life.

HOW TO ACCESS THE EVENT:

 Private/Personal vehicles:

  • Use Dennis Pritt Road and Park at St. Georges Primary School

Public Means of Transport:

  • From Westlands: Alight at Dennis Pritt Road and walk down the road. The venue is 2mins from Road House on your right.
  • From Town: Take a No. 46 and alight at Quality. Walk down the road toward Lenana Road. The venue is a few minutes from Spinal Injury Hospital.

When there, I noticed that Fashion also took center stage of the festival, with different designers showcasing their creativity on interiors and fabrics. I loved this as I got to snap some fabulous Pictures for Nairobi street style.

If its something you have not attended before I would highly recommend it. Prepare yourself  and come and enjoy a carnival affair with fan, food, drinks, kids corner and wide variety of vendors dealing with arts and fashion. The aim of this event is encourage familiarization with your neighbor for a safer and friendlier community feeling. I mean, How cool is that?

If you live in Kilimani, then you should come experience a special day of shopping and having a good time with your friends on your street. How fun!

On To The Outfit

Boho chic is one of my all-time favorite style vibes, but it can be tricky to pull off. Fret not as I have a simple, easy cheat sheet to help you nail bohemian style in a flash. Maxi dresses represent an easiness  and femininity often seen in boho chic style. The color white and the maxi dress goes so well as you often create a breezy and refreshing outfit.

One advantage of wearing a maxi dress is that you really don’t have to do much to style it. It literally covers your entire body. So it comes down to the style and cutting of the dress, and the accessories and shoes that affects whether the outfit looks good. In this case, I simply wore the beautiful dress with black sock boots and it looked amazing.

If you are one of those who like more creativity or you simply like more layers, this one may be for you. Simply drape a denim jacket over your shoulders for a super chic look. Turn this outfit into a boho outfit by wearing a boho style statement necklace and some chic African rings. Whether your prefer distressed leather or cloth, fringe or suede, a tiny cross-body or an oversized hobo bag, having a reliable and fantastic purse is key to tying your outfit all together.

Outfit Details

Jacket: Thrifted

Dress: Forever 21

Rings: Maasai Market

Bag: Old

Boots: H&M

If it were a sunny day, Oversized sunglasses would have been the choice as  they transcended boho girls and became a huge fashion trend just a few years ago. Although they aren’t as popular in the mainstream anymore, they’re still a bohemian staple. I tend to break, scratch, and lose sunglasses, so I typically just get inexpensive pairs from Kadenyi Pop Up.

If you have reach this point of the blog post, I really want to encourage you to take just one little step further. That is to go to your wardrobe or your local stores to try out a bohemian maxi dress, got to the Kilimani Street festival and get out of your comfort zone.

Vivid shadows and liners have dominated the eyes of runway models over the years. Make up artists have swapped the basic black and brown for every shade in the rainbow. Second to this has been glossy lids; It’s one of those fashion week/internet beauty trends that I’ve found so enticing but, until recently, couldn’t quite work out how to appropriate for the everyday. This is the inspiration behind today’s shoot.

While researching, many articles suggested using baby oil to create a “wet look” eye shadow, We of course tried it out with Cynthia with foundation underneath but the oil mixed with the foundation making my face muddy. So I had to clean my face and douse myself in oil as she sprinkled a beautiful Morphe shade on my eyelids. Just as I opened my eyes we found it collected in my eye lid crease almost immediately. Not getting defeated, we had to do this whole shoot with my eyes shut which was so nerve wrecking because I really didn’t know how the final look would come out.

Quick Tip

If you want to re purpose your broken shadow, mix a little shadow with Vaseline for a pigmented gloss. When I tried this, the sheen ended up being somewhere between a lip gloss and a lipstick. I’d recommend this if you want to create a custom color or wear a crazy hue (like blue, green, or black) for the night — it beats purchasing an entire tube of lipstick you’ll only wear a few times. You can also use clear lip balm if you don’t have Vaseline, but Vaseline is definitely the cheapest route.

I love how the final look came out, going with my theme of hairstyles inspired from the past, my curly fringe partnered with the glossy body complemented the entire concept. Who knew glossy eyelids would become decidedly more ethereal than editorial?

What do you think of the final look? Have you tried glossy lids before? Lemme me know in the comment section below.

In the past few years, we’ve all got used to using more complexion make-up, as they call it in the biz. Sculpting and highlighting products have become a new normal for many women’s cosmetics bags. But it is quite an effort. There are signs, though, that the grip of this fashion for a multitoned chiselled face is loosening.

In ancient Egypt, ground red ochre (a natural pigment) was mixed with fat to create a red tint that people would smear on their lips and their cheeks that popped against the harsh black kohl around their eyes. At the recent catwalk collections, many of the make-up artists used just a pop of pink on the cheeks. Chanel and Simone Rocha sent models out looking flushed.

Trendy makeup companies aimed at young women are trying to make it seem super cool again too, launching liquid and stick blushes that people are currently obsessing over. We were totally inspired by Rihannas look in the Met gala when creating this look but added our own touch to it as its a slightly over the top blush look.

So, here’s to blush, not only for its ability to survive a gruesome and lengthy history and come out as one of the most effective makeup items of our time, but also for constantly adapting to trends and the women who love to wear it.

One of my childhood memories resonate from swimming at Wild Waters.

Set in the sunshine coast of Kenya, Wild waters boast a wide range of fun and exhilarating entertainment facilities for all ages! With 15 Adult and Kids Water Slides, a unique Rain Dance Disco Arena, a Gaming Arcade, Bumper Cars, and a number of theme rides, Wild Waters is the complete entertainment facility equipped at maximizing your amusement. They also have a large food court and bar that serves both local and internationally branded cuisines.

Prices

Wild Waters charges are based on whether customers choose to use the water facilities to swim and slide. The fees are therefore based on sliders and non sliders as follows:

Resident Slider Kshs 1,400
Non-Resident Slider Kshs 1,600

“Kindly note that prices are subject to change without notification”

The winding tunnels at Wild Waters look like they just sit, lazily basking in the sun, waiting for you to hop on so they can spit you out in to the pool. They do not look like much, especially when the place is empty and there’s no water flowing through them. You know the adventure that awaits you from what everyone says, but some of these things need to be experienced to be believed.

On the second day of our #ATSTravelSquad trip, Me and Susan decided to be young again and try on the rides… Here’s the thing – you cannot really prepare for the things that those tunnels make you feel. Screaming is going to happen but it helps take my mind off the fear. For the first ride they let me share a floater with Susan in the tunnels and it was so much fun! Th drop was not something we expected and so it was quite exhilarating. If you take that control freak friend of yours who just needs to take a chill pill, or that other one who’s too stiff. If you have letting go issues, hop on to that train as well and start with the tunnel in your favourite colour.

If you like a challenge, start with the black tunnel/ black hole. Lie on the floater facing up and close your eyes – or keep your eyes open because it will be so dark, it will not matter anyway. Press the scream button, which although pretty effective, will become harder and more embarrassing to do if you’re past 20. And then let the water lead you to wherever it pleases. Let go.

By the time you’re on your 5th ride though, you will not know what fear is. Those landings though – those may take some getting used to! Good thing, most of the tunnels empty in the shallow pool, so you need not worry if you can hardly swim. Just get going already!

After all that swimming we had a scrumptious coastal meal from the food court and called it a day.

Some time last year my best friend (Monday) and I decided to go to Fisherman’s Camp on the shores of Lake Naivasha. It is an extension from a  beautiful canopy of acacia trees up into the hills, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding areas.

We are trying to do a monthly Travel on a budget series where we will teach you guys how to travel without breaking the bank. To get to Naivasha, we took three Matatus; Nairobi-Naivasha then another to the camp which cost us a total of Ksh 200.  Just an hour and a half from Nairobi, it offers a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city,to relax by the lake or set yourself for an amazing Kenyan adventure!

We first arrived at the Bottom Camp, at the shore of Lake Naivasha which is a beautiful campground covered by acacia trees, which house a wide variety of wildlife such as the resident colobus monkeys, lovebirds, African Fish Eagles and the occasional marabou stork. You can even watch hippo grazing at dusk from your tent – but don’t worry, an electric fence deters them from venturing into the main camp! Tents can also be hired on request and they also have 4 rustic bandas (chalet) with toilet and hot shower and a fully equipped cottage if you prefer to sleep in more comfort.

We however stayed at the Top Camp which sits above South Lake Road and looks out over Lake Naivasha with breathtaking views of the Aberdare Mountains. It was quite a hike but the views were definitely worth it.  They have a number of cottages to suit a range of budgets, all with a veranda looking out to the Lake.

The prices are as follows:

Fisherman’s Camp Bottom camp (on the lake shore) 0726870590, 0718880634

BANDAS (2/4Pax)
6000/-
(Friday, Saturday and Public Holiday)
2,000/-Adult
1,000/-Child
(Sunday-Thursday)
KASUKU COTTAGE
(6Pax) per night
10,000/-
(Friday, Saturday and Public Holiday)
2,500/- Adult
1,500/-Child
(Sunday-Thursday)

Fisherman’s Top camp, (overlooking the lake) 0792597228.

Kusini cottage (4 pax), Kwazi cottage (3 pax)and Kitete cottage(4 pax)
5,000/-
Karibu cottage(5 pax)
12,000/-
Kongoni banda (5 pax)
5,000/-
Little Kwazi and other small bandas (2 pax) 1,000/- (communal showers and loo.)

We happen to stay at Little Kwazi which was a lovely little cottage and it only cost us Ksh 1000 each! Can you believe that?

The Fisherman’s camp has a that Bar overlooks the campground and offers a wide variety of meals, from traditional ugali, tasty local steaks to a hearty fry up, not to mention a cold Tusker beer or honey Dawa cocktail as you watch the sun go down.

I definitely recommend you to go and visit this beautiful cottage, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a cold Tusker beer whilst watching the hippo grazing at the lake shores. Safari njema!

I went for a casual and comfy look for this trip and I quite liked it.

Happy Thursday my sweet friends!

I hope you all are having a great week! I feel like its been such a long time since I sat down an typed on my website. It feels so good, I have missed you guys so much. Have you missed me? I  have so many blog posts that are coming up that I shot this and last year I’m sure all of you will love.

Photography Vince Oyolo

To start you off, how to style faux fur coats. It’s no surprise that they’re one of my favorite outerwear pieces, as I’ve worn them countless times on the gram but I dont think I’ve talked about how to wear them in the blog. Today, I thought it would be a good idea to share how I would style them making it easier to reference later on.

Being a fashion blogger, I do challenge myself to think outside the box and wear clothing that perhaps I wouldn’t otherwise wear and through doing so, I’ve found that some pieces I’d perhaps turn my head to are actually quite practical, one of which are faux fur coats. Before blogging, I would’ve most likely thought, though stylish, they wouldn’t be at all practical for everyday kind of wear and save them more for special occasions. Honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Perhaps some of you feel this way and for that reason alone don’t own one, feeling as though you’d never get any real use out if it. These three outfits are ones that I feel can be easily worn on the regular. It all comes down to how you put the pieces together to make it more practical and less forced.

Wearing black is not only chic and flattering, but super easy. It serves as somewhat of a blank canvas for whatever accessory or layering piece you wish to add to bring the outfit to life and make it more interesting, including a faux fur coat. When done in fun colors or patterns, they’ll pop even more against the monochrome, and even if you decided to go for an understated version in black or another solid colored neutral like this cropped tee, the texture contrast itself adds an equal impact, making for an easy no-fuss option.

Hello there beautiful people. For today’s post, I’m going to talk about my first review on Urban Decay’s Naked 3 makeup brushes. I have had this brushes for a long time and must admit they have been good to me.

First come first, talking about its packaging, The brushes come in a tin box with ‘NAKED 3 URBAN DECAY’ written on it.

The box contains 12 medium sized brushes. The box is travel friendly and is really appealing to the eyes. Also, the set is nearly well endowed with all the brushes that you might need.

Each brush has a silver body with the golden edge and brown soft hair. They are secured well in a classy tin casing with of course, the brand NAKED 3 Urban Decay printed on each brush and the cover.
Now comes the experience, apart from it looking really pretty and coming in very viable packaging, Urban Decay Naked 3 Power Brush Set also has good quality brushes inside. They are super soft on the face and do a flawless job of blending your entire makeup without any blotting or patchiness on the face.

Also, if you love makeup, but are still in the learning process and obviously you need to practice a lot. For that, you need the correct brushes to master any look, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend tens of thousands. Investing in a new collection of Urban Decay Naked 3 brushes are one of the best bargains.

Uses of the Make Up Brushes

So breaking it down; What I like about this makeup brush set is that:
1.) It is affordable
2.) It comes with a sturdy tin case
3.) It includes the basic types of brushes needed
4.) The bristles doesn’t shed
5.) Suitable for beginners and
6.) Easy to clean.
Overall, I can recommend this brush set for those who are starting out in using makeup.
It can also work great as an alternative travel set or spare brush just when you’re too lazy to clean your main set. I am planning on getting many more brushes so as to review them for you guys. Do you use any other make up brushes? If so, kindly leave a comment and tell me about your experience with the product 🙂
